Do not hastily react to suspicious e-mails claiming to originate from Information Technology Service Center of NYCU, any government organization, or other academic institutes. From time to time, we could find suspicious messages, containing harmful links to malicious websites, go viral on the campus network. These could become severely threats to individual people and computer devices (e.g., steal your personal confidential information, spread computer viruses).

Keeping Your Personal Information Secure Online

1.          Install an anti-virus program and keep its definition up to update: the anti-virus program can safeguard your computer and provide additional protection in case of opening a file containing virus codes erroneously.

2.          Do not open e-mail messages coming from doubtful sources.

3.          Never hastily give out your personal information through the mail: do not respond to any e-mail requesting for your personal information (e.g., username, password, credit card details).

4.          If in doubt, contact the “sender” (i.e., the one with the username

recorded on the received message) to verify whether the person actually sent the message.

5.          Avoid opening suspicious attachments: this is because computer viruses can hide themselves in compressed files or disguise as any types of files, such as .doc, .pdf, and .jpg.

6.          Avoid using links embedded in e-mail messages: if in need, type any URL into the address bar of a browser of your communication device (e.g., computer, smart phone) by yourself. This can prevent any fake URL from directing your device to a malicious site containing malware codes.

7.          Please change the password of your e-mail account periodically (e.g., very 6 months): to prevent any attacker from exploiting the password which might be broken due to some reason(s) in the past.
